The Martial Arts & Fitness Company

  About Us

Budo Kyokushin Karate was established as a dojo (karate school) on the 09 April 1992 in the Eastern Suburb of Melbourne called Burwood.

A small school that was opened by Shihan Bill Poly, then only a Nidan (2nd Dan) and Sempai Garry Clarke a Shodan (1st Dan).

Both Instructors came from the dojo of Shihan Eddie Emin of the International Kyokushin Karate Australia organization. (IKKA)

It was at this dojo that the beginnings of Budo Karate Kyokushin Australia (BKKA) and the Martial Arts and Fitness Company began. The school operated twice a week with Bill Poly taking one night and Garry Clarke taking the other.

This worked quite well as both instructors were still able to train with Shihan Eddie Emin and assist him with his club. A few years later Garry Clarke had to move to New Zealand so the dojo was left to Shihan Bill Poly to operate.

A decision had to be made whether to continue with the dojo or close it down as Shihan Bill was not sure whether he was able to operate the dojo on his own. The decision was made to continue as he received the help from a couple of other instructors from other dojos to take classes when he was not available.

It was not until 1998 when Shihan Bill Poly was awarded the full status of Branch Chief under Shokei Matsui and the International Karate Organization Kyokushinkaikan Japan. (IKO).

At this point in time Shihan Bill Poly broke away from the IKKA and formed his own organization Budo Kyokushin Karate Australia. Still affiliated and working with Shihan Eddie Emin and the IKKA the opportunity arose to expand and be affiliated directly with Honbu Japan and to establish his own personal identity.

With word going around that Shihan Bill Poly was going out on his own a number of instructors approached him and asked to be affiliated with him. These instructors were Sensei’s Trevor Frith, Brett Thompson, Steve Newton and Sempai’s Janusz Pozadski, Nick Charakas and Toula Doumbos.

To this day all the instructors with the exception of one and their respective dojos still remain affiliated with Shihan Bill Poly. The organization has expanded even more with the recent affiliation of a couple more instructors and their dojos.

Sensei Trevor Frith having trained with Shihan Bill Poly for many years developed the basic ideals and principals that Budo Kyokushin Karate operates on today.

Our mission was to develop an organization that was free of politics and to move away from the political hold that encompassed many other organizations.

Our mission statement today is to train in the traditional way of Kyokushin ” the way that Sosai OYAMA wanted us to train. Our sole mottoe and attitude is geared around to training. All we want to do is train and train hard in the old ways.

Shihan Bill Poly for many years was determined to make this work and hence was solely focused in developing his core group of instructors that held the same values.

We now have a number of dojos throughout Victoria that are focused on sharing the same desire and passion to train like the days of Sosai and to train in kata and basics like the way it should be trained.

Budo Kyokushin Karate is currently affiliated with the All Japan Kyokushin Union, headed by Shihan Hasegawa, Oishi, Okada, Shichinohe, Tabata and others.

In Australia the organizations of Shihan Eddie Emin, Jim Phillips, George Kolovos and Trevor Fields are also affiliated with the All Japan Union. Geared around training together they work to bring unity amongst Kyokushin Australia. They all operate independently however come together to offer the students to compete in one National and State tournament.
