This weekend is the Kyokushin Victorian Titles in Ballarat. There are 14 representatives from our dojo, 11 Full Contact Fighters and 3 Kata. 

Karatekas attending the tournament this weekend have spent countless hours in the dojo training and preparing both physically and mentally. They have shown determination on and off the mat and are heading towards great success for this Sunday!

Shihan Bill Poly has been invited by his long time friend and fellow Karateka Shihan Robert Wiklund to work closely with him in Sweden; where he will be taking a Go Shin Jitsu and Fighting Seminar.

 

This week I had the chance to ask Shihan Bill Poly some questions about the upcoming event and also found out a little more about his seminars. 

 

How Long have you known Shihan Robert Wiklund?

 

 

I had the honour of meeting Shihan Wiklund in Hawaii in the late 1980s, two young karatekas invited by Shihan Lowe to compete in the full contact tournaments. We were both full contact fighters trying to compete in as many tournaments as we can. Since then we can became close friends and a big part of the Kyokushin family. Our paths have crossed in many places around the world and I am so looking forward to meeting him again in his home country and  to be a part of his Kyokushin family. One of the most common questions asked to a martial artist.

How does a five year old understand why he or she is doing karate?

Do they really understand and know what they are actually doing?

Interesting topic however at that age maybe we should ask the parents why?

 

However what answer do you get when you ask a 5 year old why he or she is doing karate? Most common answer?… have a guess….” I don’t know ”

 

Having dealt with and obtaining a great pleasure by teaching martial arts to young children at that age it’s about teaching them to learn to fight not to fight. A motto that Budo Kyokushin Kids strongly believes in. We can show kids how to kick and punch however the difficulty becomes how do we teach them not to use it or when is it actually time to use it. For a 5 year old it’s all about fun and games.
